Should You Drink Lemon Water Every Day?

Posted in Mama Time by

I have really been trying to make healthy life changes for myself lately.

Back in the Fall, I thought I would try an experiment and drink lemon water every morning. There are plenty of articles out there offering support as to why you should drink lemon water every day. What types of claims are out there you ask?

If you drink lemon water every morning you will:

*Get a ton of extra Vitamin C to give your immune system a boost.

*Burn fat. (WOOHOO!!)

*Reduce inflammation.

*Get off of caffeine.

*Rejuvenate your skin.

*Give your metabolism a jump start.

*Remove the toxins from your body.

We had a whole discussion/argument at family dinner a few weeks ago about the scientific evidence of the last two. Not with lemon water specifically, but more about the existence of toxins in your body and also the necessity/possibility to jump start your metabolism. But I’m not going to get into that today…

I feel as if lemon water was actually able to do all of those things, wouldn’t everyone drink it every day? There are some pretty big claims on why you should drink lemon water every day. But does it live up to those claims? Here is what I notice when I drank it daily.
I will admit, the above are what got me drinking it in the first place. They’re all pretty big claims and I was curious if it could stand up to any of them.

After drinking lemon water every morning for several weeks, this is what I found for me.

**It gives me a nice pick-me-up. I think it’s from the tartness that “wakes up” my body…but maybe one could argue that it’s jump starting my metabolism and helping to get me off of caffeine? Maybe…

**While drinking the lemon water daily, I dodged a pretty wicked cold that went through my household. When someone in my family gets sick, it gets us all. One right after the other. While I had a few sneezes and a runny nose that lasted for a minute (okay, maybe an hour or two), I pretty much side stepped that illness. I kept expecting it to hit me hard, but I can honestly say, it never did.

Was it the heavy dose of Vitamin C for an immunity boost? Could be…

**It feels healthy, so it makes me want to be healthy. Does that make sense? Whenever I get on a healthy eating kick, or start exercising more, it becomes easier and easier to turn down that cookie dough.

I did not lose weight. I don’t think I reduced any inflammation. And my skin seemed to stay the same.

That said, I plan to keep on drinking it, because if for no other real significant reason, it just makes me feel good.

Like any change in your diet and health, be sure to listen to your body. Lemon water may be a fantastic addition to your morning ritual. Or, it may hurt your teeth… Just do what feels right for you.

The original article I read about drinking lemon water suggested a whole lemon.

One whole juiced lemon in a glass of water.

Adorable, naive me, jumped on it. I thought, “No biggie, I can just chug it.”

No. No you cannot just chug a glass of mostly lemon juice.

Now what I do is about half of a lemon in my water bottle. It’s perfect. It’s still pretty tart, but after awhile, it grew on me, and now I look forward to it.

**Pro tip! Juice about 6 lemons for the week and freeze the lemon juice in ice cube trays. Then just grab one cube and throw it in your water bottle or a hot cup of water in the morning each day. For my cubes, they equal about a half of a lemon. There are some pretty big claims on why you should drink lemon water every day. But does it live up to those claims? Since running my experiment, I have fallen off the wagon a bit, but I just put some lemon juice in the freezer today so I’m going to get back on it in the morning!
