Making Family Fun Happen

This week has not gone quite as planned. My husband’s birthday was Friday, so he took the whole week off to have fun with the family.

Things started off well.

To kick off his birthday week, I took the kids to my parents’ to get them (and me) out of his hair for two nights. (I know, I’m pretty rad.)

On Saturday (after a non-existent night of sleep, thanks to the boy), my husband joined me, my dad, my brother, and Z at the Hood Canal in Belfair to do some clam digging. Nothing beats digging in the mud for dinner.

We have never had an easier time finding our limit in clams (40 per person). We used a little rake tool and only had to scratch the surface of the mud, clams were everywhere. So Awesome.

Turns out the Little Miss likes to eat them too-A lot!

I was surprised she tried them at all. I think it has something to do with the fact that she helped dig them up. So far, it was a great start to his vacation. And to top it off, after eating delicious, fresh clams, he got to go back home, kid (and wife) free.

Then Monday came along. I got sick. I was laid out for two days. Daddy got to take care of the kiddos. Have I mentioned we have a threenager and an almost two year old in the midst of the Terrible Twos? He’s a great dad, so he was up to the task.

However, by the end of the second day, he started forgetting things. He forgot his PIN number for his debit card. I mean, completely blanked it out while pumping gas. Then he forgot his phone. There were a few more things on the list-just enough so he started thinking he was going crazy. I’ve been telling him about “mommy brain” for years, I think he finally believes me.

Wednesday and Thursday were more or less “relax” days. The kiddos were acting a little crazy for some reason. The weather wasn’t great, so we were stuck inside. I’m sure it has something to do with the “crazy.” (In case you’re keeping track, that’s four days completely wiped out from his time off.)

Finally, on Friday (his birthday, and his last official day of vacation), we were able to do some of the fun family activities we had planned for the week.

We went to the Kids Discovery Museum on Bainbridge Island. The kids had a blast! The highlight (for me, anyway), was the gigantic Lite Brite.

Saturday, we went to the zoo.

It was a really great time chasing after kids and dragging them to see animals. All they wanted to do was play at the playground there. Next time, we’ll go to the park down the street.

In the last half hour we were there, we saw the walruses. They were huge show-offs, so they were a big hit with the girl. She’ll be talking about them for days.

The rest of the weekend, we just hung out and relaxed.

We had big expectations for the week, fun activities, day trips, etc… Instead of being disappointed, we were able to roll with the punches and make the best of it. We still had plenty of highlights and made some fun memories.

I suppose it’s part of our job description as parents to be flexible and adapt to our situation. And next time, we won’t put as much pressure on ourselves to make every single day fun. Live and learn.

What have you been up to this week? Have you made exciting plans that didn’t turn out how you hoped? How did you handle it?

Clam digging is one of my favorites, but I really can’t wait until crabbing season. That is the best!

Looks like fun! I would love to play with a gigantic Lite Brite. When my daughter and husband have vacation, I like to go to some cool places but also just have some days to relax also.

    So….will you adopt me? 🙂

I think they also have the light-brite wall at the kids museum in Manhattan (we were there years ago).

The family that plays together stays together 🙂 Looks like you guys are having fun!

Wow, I think you did pretty great to get out as much as you did! I take everything one day at a time and rarely have anything exciting planned. We do go places, just not at a planned time or a planned day.
