Easy DIY Father’s Day Gift

Posted in Holidays by

Several months ago, I was inspired by one of my favorite blogs, Maggie Mays Gifts, to make a really fun Christmas wreath with coffee filters. I have a ton of filters left over and my little lady and I have been doing all sorts of crafts with them.

One day, my girl had a blast painting some of them. I’ve been hanging on to these silly coffee filters she painted for months.

They’ve been moved from the counter, to the kitchen table, back to the counter. For some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away. I finally figured it out. It’s because I love them so much! My daughter loves to paint and the colors she used for this project happen to be her favorites. Plus, they look so cool!

So I hung onto them in hopes that I would be able to come up with some clever way to display them where they wouldn’t look like, well, painted coffee filters. Who knows how long I’ve actually had them.

Either way, during the week of our screen time challenge, I was forced to get creative with our time. This led me to putting together a really cool DIY Father’s Day gift. All I needed was a frame with a mat, ideally with a few openings so I could use more than one painted coffee filter. I’m usually not a huge fan of the Dollar Store, but man, sometimes it pulls through! I found a frame with three different spaces for three different pieces. I chose my favorites and taped them onto the back. The Little Girl helped me with this part. She was pretty excited to revisit her masterpieces. I put a white sheet of paper behind the coffee filters because you can see through them a little bit. And viola!I thought it turned out so cool! Another awesome thing about this little project (aside from costing me a dollar, and only taking up about five minutes of my time), it’s so versatile! You can use all different types of art projects to frame. Their crayon scribble drawings, the mixed paint pieces, watercolors… They almost look like professional art pieces, (or better than some professional art pieces…) This gift is going to look perfect in my husband’s office! As it is, he has a mish-mash of random paintings and drawings by our girl just taped up all over. This piece looks like we got it from Bed, Bath, and Beyond! (Ha! Well, almost…)

Do you have any of your kids’ artwork hanging around that you just can’t seem to let go of? Do you have any big plans for a Father’s Day gift?

Thank you! I feel silly because I had never really thought about it before. I want to have her paint with watercolors again so I can frame those-I love watercolors!

This is so cute! I love giving handmade things for Father’s Day. We have so much art around the house, I need to make a giant corkboard.

How cool! I love how her art just peeks through. You are right, that would look cool too with her drawings and other artwork that she does. I know what you mean about not being able to throw certain things away. Some things can go right in the trash (secretly πŸ™‚ ) and others are priceless to us for some reason.
That is a perfect father’s day gift!
