I hope everyone has been having a fantastic summer so far! I have been taking it easy on the writing side of blogging (you would think that is the biggest part…it’s not…)
We have been seriously enjoying our mediocre summer weather. Up here in the PNW, you never know what the sunny season will bring. Usually we can rely on a few nice days leading up to the Fourth of July, then after that, it’s consistently nice through September.
Not this year. When the days have been sunny, it is only in the afternoon for a few hours. And we have not had a sunny day since the fourth! No matter, we live here, so we’re used to this kind of weather, right?
With the rain, comes time inside. And although my kiddos’ screen time is limited, my daughter found plenty of time to find her new TV love. His name is Jake.
You know, the adorable, upbeat pirate that is so optimistic about everything you can see the happy seep off of his face? But honestly, as far as kid shows go, it’s pretty cute. The characters always run into problems and they work together as a team to get through it. What parent can’t appreciate that?
So, from this new pirate obsession of our daughter’s, my husband came up with a really fun game. I’m calling it the Super Easy Treasure Hunt, (and you can put it together for less than $5!!).
You can make the map with supplies you already have at home. All you need is paper and markers, (or crayons, or pencils…) My husband got pretty fancy with it and burned the paper all around the edges. It gave it a much more “authentic” look. Be sure to be careful if you decide to go this route! Not to state the obvious, but paper burns super fast!!! He burned it over the bathroom sink. As you can see in the photo, he drew the map making it obvious where everything was. And of course there were dashed lines to the most exciting part, to the giant X!
It’s really easy to find a fun “treasure-y” container for whatever little trinkets you deem fit for your little one. My husband chose these really cute candle holder lamps and stuffed them with marbles, “jewels,” and candy.
Our girl had such a blast, (and her little brother had fun tagging along)! She has not stopped talking about it and keeps asking when we’re going to do it again.
Next time we’re going to have a few maps. The first map will lead her to the second map, the second map to the third, etc. I think that would be a lot of fun!!
What have you been up to this summer? Have you gotten to enjoy some sunshine?
