Nerdy Hobbies and a Giveaway!

I’ve picked up a lot of kooky hobbies in the past that may or may not be in the nerdy hobbies category. I can’t say that I mind too much, though, because if I’m having fun, I don’t care what people think.

When I was in college, I swing danced every day. I got to teach a class at my University where I ended up meeting my husband. He took my class to impress girls. Turns out, it worked!

A few years later, I picked up quilling. Yes, that is correct, QUILLING. For those of you that aren’t familiar, it’s where you have special tools and really long, thin strips of paper. You essentially roll the paper, on the needle-like tool, then squeeze it to make different designs.

That particular phase in my life didn’t last long. It was fun, but I quickly got distracted with other things.[expander_maker more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]

My husband and I went through a nice long stretch of geocaching. We were into it back in the days where you had use a good old fashioned Garmin to get to you to the cache.

If you’ve never heard of geocaching, you can find out more in this post by Alana from Parenting from the Heart. Bottom line, it’s a lot of fun, great for kids, but super nerdy.

Geocaching in Tombstone, Arizona in 2009. Yes, we saw the sights, but mostly we geocached.

My latest hobby involves rocks.

A local mommy friend of mine added me to a Facebook group that paints and hides rocks. Seriously.

From what I understand, this particular hobby is for kids. They paint the rocks, hide them, find others that were hidden. Perfect for them!!

But if you were to take a peek at some of the rocks being painted, it is clear that the parents are seriously involved. I may or may not be guilty of this myself.

What can I say? Turns out painting rocks is fun and therapeutic.

For the most part, this has been just me and my girl. She loves any sort of artistic activities and appreciates sharing her creative process with someone right next to her.

My son has been completely indifferent with our new little hobby. Until now.

I received a package of Kwik Stix to do a review.

It’s tempera paint in an easy to hold stick. It writes like a glue stick, but dries like paint. And this stuff is dry in 90 seconds.

I can’t explain it, but he loves it. My best guess is that it isn’t messy.

And no matter how many times he has tested it by dropping the paint on the floor, it has never left a mark.

Now he can get more involved with our rock painting. He doesn’t last as long as Z and I, but he has been able to make a few rocks for us to hide around town.

I still use my acrylic paint for my rocks, but my girl and the little guy love experimenting with Kwik Stix.

And rocks of course aren’t their actual intended use. It’s just how we have been able to get my little guy into our latest hobby.

They work anywhere you would use tempera paint. Paper, canvas, wood. Miss Z and I have been going through the construction paper with these suckers.

Apparently, we’re really into painting…

And now I have some really great news for my lovely readers! I’m giving away a few sets of Kwik Stix! Three to be exact.

First prize is a pack of the Original Colors.

Second prize is a pack of the Metalix Colors. (My personal fave!)

And Third prize is a pack of the Neon Colors.

Kwik Stix are perfect for little hands so they can paint away with no mess!

All of the colors are gorgeous and vibrant. I have no doubt you and your little ones would have a great time experimenting with them. So go ahead, enter to win!

My daughter loves to paint her coloring books, rather than use crayons. 🙂
