Get Your Kid to Clean Their Room

Sometimes parenting can be a struggle. (Understatement of the year.) One of my biggest struggles lately has been getting my daughter to clean her room.

It does not make sense to me that it is so difficult for her to put things away that she got out herself.
Alternatively, it is shocking to her that I expect her to put her things away.

If I let it, it can be a daily battle. I want her to take care of her things and be, at least a little, tidy. She could care less.

After some thought, I figured out a way to get her to clean her room. And I don’t have to bug her about it. In fact, she actually does it without me asking her.[Tweet “Find out how I got my kid to WANT to clean her room!!”]

After her complaints when I would ask her to clean, “it’s too hard,” “I don’t know how,” etc, I figured out the bottom line was, she needed direction…with specific instructions on what to do.

So I made her a list of things that need to be done while cleaning her room. For each chore, there is a picture of what needs to be done right next to the simple instructions. We went over the list once, and she has been using it since!

The neighbor girl loves to use it too so whenever she comes over, the girls always clean up after playing!

Since it has been working out so well, I made a printable to share with you!

To get your kids involved right off the bat, I made it black and white so they can color the pictures themselves. I would also suggest printing it off once, and after it’s decorated, laminate it. That way, the kiddos can use it over and over again! Also, I don’t know about your kids, but mine is obsessed with dry erase markers lately. If she gets to use one to mark off the little check marks on her list, all the more reason to clean her room!!
